Crank Up Underway!

5 May 2015 - Club Events Category

Today saw the first day of the revived Saffron Walden Crank Up, organised by John Hunt on behalf of the East Anglian Traction Engine Society

The Crank Up is certainly not the largest of shows, a factor which it uses to great advantage. Space is at a premium so exhibitor camping is for the most part in a separate field from the main event. This means, that unlike a lot of other events the exhibits are not overly spaced out, or cluttered with caravans and modern day vehicles. This allows a really intimate feeling, evoking the aura of the early days of Steam Rallys in the late 1950s. Such nostalgia is particularly appropriate in the clubs 60th Anniversary Year.

Alongside the myriad of exhibits (about which we’ll write a separate piece in a few days time) are an excellent selection of trade stalls and local crafts. Food is provided not from a conventional catering unit but from a converted Bedford TK box van and is of the best quality. A traditional children’s fun fair is offered by local showman Joseph Rule of nearby Ickleton.

The show really does offer something for everyone, and is well worth a visit. Tomorrow (Sunday 9th) is the last day and entry is just £5 for Adults. Children under 16 go free. If you are thinking of joining us at the show, its just off the B1052 near the B1383 junction adjacent to ‘Just like Wend’ys’ at Sparrows End, CB11 3TU.

More information about the show can be found at www.swcrankup.co.uk or for more photos of the event visit our Facebook page - just search East Anglian Traction Engine Society once on the Facebook site
